Debuting this holiday with Super Smash Bros. Wii U

Nintendo unveiled its new line of Skylanders-like NFC toys, amiibo, during its E3 digital event today. Confirmed titles include Smash Bros and Skylanders, and these will work “only for Nintendo systems.”

It sounds like these figures will introduce RPG mechanics in Super Smash Bros., allowing you to train and customize your characters. With enough effort, you might even be able to finally best your unbeatable friends with the help of amiibo.

Each figure has a special chip inside, and it will be recognized on any Wii U using the built-in NFC technology. More details on that and other games that will make use of the technology, like Mario Kart 8, soon.

A peripheral is coming next year that allows amiibo to be used on Nintendo 3DS.
