Nintendo announces Calligraphy Training DS for Japan

I know most of you guys will bored by this, but bear with me. I’m a huge fanatic for both Japan and the lost art of handwritten correspondence, so I ruined pants when I read about this game this morning. Calligraphy Training DS will come out in Japan on March 13th and offers a handy way for people to practice their Japanese calligraphy skills on the go.

The game appears to have a story mode where you control a wandering warrior in a quest to complete 3099 calligraphy characters successfully. You can also just practice your brush strokes (the game actually comes with a special”brush” stylus) or play in multiplayer mode with up to six other people to see whose brushstroke is the most accomplished.

For the average gamer, this will hurtle past the radar without a second thought, but for Americans trying to learn Japanese this ought to be a real delight to play with. The game’s official site has some flash demos up if you want to see more. I’m definitely importing this — gives me a great excuse to get up off my lazy ass and work harder on learning Japanese!
