NieR: Automata is officially a hit as shipments and digital top one million

Shipments and digital

2017 is off to a pretty crazy start, with a string of critically and commercially successful games.

That list now includes NieR: Automata, which Square Enix has announced just hit a one million milestone. Now that accomplishment comes with a caveat — that number takes both physical shipments and digital sales into account, but it’s still an impressive feat for a previously niche franchise.

The publisher didn’t break down the sales, but it seems clear that the Steam version’s quality port helped (rough low-end estimates put Steam sales in the 220,000 range). This entire series has been a passion project from director Yoko Taro, so he has a lot to be happy about! He said he wanted to make weird games because he was tired of the AAA industry, but at this point he might be getting bigger budgets! It would be great to see another Platinum collaboration — Drakengard perhaps?
