New Prototype trailer is kind of attractive, but that’s about it

A few days ago, Sierra announced Prototype, and I was less than impressed with the plot, vague as it was. Well, a cinematic trailer has been released and while it sheds a little bit of light on Prototype‘s storyline, it doesn’t make it much more appealing.

Here’s the breakdown:

1. Government creates top-secret mutant killing machine.

2. Top-secret mutant killing machine escapes and seeks revenge on the corrupt government that ruined his life.

3. ?????

4. PROTOTYPE!

That’s cool and all, but hasn’t this been done before? Final Fantasy VII did it better.

While the story remains, for me, uninteresting, the trailer certainly makes the gameplay seem fun and visceral. Of course, no self-respecting trailer actually shows any gameplay, so I’m just guessing. But the whole explosion-coming-out-of-the-ground looked really, really cool.

And in this age, where storytelling in games is a farce and technological advances have come to a grinding halt, explosions (albeit really cool ones) are the best we can hope for, right?
