Overwatch has a wonderfully deep lore behind its payload-moving gameplay. Whilst you wouldn’t necessarily know this from watching the chaotic online shooter in action, Blizzard fill out its massive roster of characters’ histories via mini-movies, comic-books, in-game profiling and character dialogue.

Yesterday it seems another medium was added, as Blizzard has released a short story online, free for all Overwatch fans. Authored by Overwatch writer Michael Chu, Bastet is the tale of two of the game’s more veteran operatives; jaded mercenary Jack Morrison – better known as Soldier: 76 – and expert sniper and medic Ana Amari.

While on a mission in Cairo, Ana encounters Morrison, whom she’d long thought dead, as well as another old compatriot. This turns out to be quite the emotional meeting for all involved, as we get to learn more about each of the characters and their histories, furthering the world-building of the online multiplayer title.

If you want to check out Bastet, then it’s freely available to read right here. An in-game skin for Ana is also expected to be released in alignment with the new short story, so Amari fans should keep an eye out for that turning up in the near-future.
