New Folklore trailer captures my soul and holds it tightly, yet gently

Dick McVengeance

has been clamoring for a fleshed-out trailer for the upcoming, PS3-exclusive Folklore, and I hope that his hunger has been satiated.

In the above trailer, we get a look at Ellen and Keats, the game’s protagonists. In short, Ellen goes to the mystical village of Doolin to find her dead mother, while Keats, a reporter, goes there to investigate the paranormal goings on in the “realm of the dead.”

While the trailer does a good job of handling the mise en scène, I want to know about the soul-sucking function. There’s no point in touting a new game mechanic that brilliantly incorporates the Sixaxis’ motion-sensing capabilities if we don’t know why to use it. I know it allows you to “capture” your enemies, but what does that really mean? I want to know how it fits into the overall narrative.

My thematic quandaries aside, Folklore looks amazing. It’s detailed, fluid, colorful, and wonderfully voiced. Personally, I was reminded more of Stardust and Willow than Final Fantasy, and that’s certainly not a bad thing.

Is this climbing up you guys’ DO WANT list like it is mine?
