It might be the time of the year that gamers think about the industry’s various game consoles as mortal enemies, but it seems that Super Dimension Game Neptune, a JRPG about game consoles who can transform into cute anime girls, does not subscribe to that attitude.
Instead, the holy gameworld goddesses Purple Heart, Green Heart, White Heart, and Black Heart cooperate to fight the dastardly Majikon (wordplay on the Japanese slang for flash carts) and save their gameworlds (Planetune, Leanbox, Ruii, and Raystation) from monstrous invasion. Aside from Neptune, who’s a fictional Sega Saturn sequel that never was, can you tell which goddess corresponds to which current-gen console?
To aid them in the battle are anthropomorphizations of various game companies, including Compile Heart (the Agarest War people), Gust (the Ar Tonelico people), and Nippon Ichi (the Disgaea people), as well as classic Sega characters like Shinobi, Space Harrier, Altered Beast, and Alex Kidd, who can be summoned using Neptune’s special skills. Players can even add yet more game characters to their summoning roster by using images from their PS3’s photo library.
I want this game so badly. Unfortunately for the spirit of industry cooperation though, the game itself is so far just a PS3 exclusive.
[Update: Clarified who Neptune herself is (rather, is not). Apologies to people who got a headache trying to place her.]
