Naughty Dog knows it has a big task ahead of it when attempting to top the critically acclaimed Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. In fact, as the studio works on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, the team reveals that the “crushing pressure” is very scary.
“There’s a lot more pressure now on us than I think there ever has been,” says animation lead Josh Scherr. “We want to meet and beat peoples’ expectations but frankly we’re just putting a lot of our own pressure on ourselves to do a better game than we did last time.
Creative director Amy Hennig backs Scherr up: “Making Uncharted 3 there’s a ton of pressure – it’s a crushing amount of pressure to be honest. Some of it’s self-imposed and some of it’s naturally imposed by the circumstances when you know you’ve got a big fanbase out there that’s waiting for any scrap of information and can’t wait for the next game.”
Scherr finds the challenge ahead “terrifying” and, given how ludicrous beloved Among Thieves was, who can blame them? That said, I think the fans are going to lap it up no matter what, so they’ve probably got little to worry about.
