Mortal Kombat 9 vanishes from Steam Store, PS3 multiplayer server shut down

All is not well in the world of Mortal Kombat (2011), as this weekend saw a series of strange maneuvers pulled around the best-selling release, one that successfully rebooted NetherRealm’s fighting franchise for a whole new generation of players.

It began when ResetEra spotted that Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition had quietly vanished from the Steam Store without explanation – despite still being available to purchase digitally on PS3 and Xbox One. This was then followed by the removal of the base game from the PSN store, (but curiously not the Komplete Edition, which is still available to purchase), and – according to the in-game “Message of the Day” – the shutting down of the PS3 edition’s multiplayer servers.

None of it bodes well, as it appears as if Warner Bros./NetherRealm are calling time on the release, one of the most beloved entries in the gory franchise. Even if some elements of the reboot have dated a little poorly (it is almost 10 years old), MK 2011 launched with a wealth of features, varied stages, a roster of fan favourites, a tag mode, 3D support, and the best story campaign to date. It was an amazing release. A celebration of the MK franchise and a true love letter to long-time fans.

If either NetherRealm or Warner Bros. offer an explanation for the status of MK (2011), we will keep you updated. It should be noted that there is a lot of talk going around pertaining to Nightmare on Elm Street DLC character Freddy Krueger being at the root of these actions but – at least at the time of writing – this is entirely fan forum speculation.
