More details on the PlayStation Eye: EyeCreate Software, replaces headset, price

The PlayStation Blog drops more info on the upcoming PS3 peripheral called PlayStation Eye.

We already know that the camera comes packed in with the $69.99 Eye of Judgement bundle, but it will also be available as a stand-alone product starting October 23, for $39.99.

As a stand-alone puchase, There’s not a lot you can do yet outside of Eye of Judgement or the upcoming PS3 SingStar, but at least there’s this EyeCreate Software we’ve been hearing about. EyeCreate will be available as a free download on the PlayStation Store, and it’s basically the PS3’s front end for all the features of the PlayStation Eye, as it lets you save, edit, and share your video and audio clips.

The post also talks about the long bar microphone on top of the PS Eye, and how it can be a replacement for headsets.

It also has a built-in 4-microphone array that allows you to enjoy online AV chat and in-game voice chat, in what we’re calling a “natural environment,” meaning, not awkwardly leaning toward your camera or speaking abnormally loud just so the mic picks up your voice. IMHO, this microphone really does do away with the need for a headset.

There’s no word from Sony on how the device performs in “sexy chat” applications yet. More word on that soon.
