Monthly Musings: the start of the affair

Is it June already? That time of year when…screw it. I hate doing intros. Suffice to say, you guys came up with some great stuff for the “if you love it, change it” theme. It was a prompt that required creativity and the ability to critique, and many of you rose to the challenge admirably.

This month’s theme, the start of the affair, is a lot easier: it’s just about you. Which videogame(s) got you into gaming in the first place? Which videogames got you addicted, or taught you something new, or told you the medium was capable of something you’d never thought possible?

If you’re here, I assume you have some sort of love affair with videogames. The nature of that affair may change from person to person, but this month’s theme asks where those affairs started. If you write something clever, or something that promotes intelligent discussion, your cblog will be promoted to the front page for all to see.

Hit the jump for a further clarification of the guidelines.

As always, title your cblog “The start of the affair: bahbahbah“.

My main worry with this title is that we all played the same few games which made us fall in love with videogames: I know I personally was roped into the world thanks to the Mario Bros/Duck Hunt combo cartridge, and I’m admittedly afraid that roughly half of the community has, as well. With that in mind, you don’t have to talk about the first videogame you played, or the game that made you start playing other videogames — you can talk about all manner of things, so long as they start some sort of obsession with the medium.

You could, for instance, talk about the game that made you realize videogames could be art. Or the game that taught you they can be a competitive sport, or an incredible storytelling medium, or just a fantastic, addictive way to waste a few hours.

The main conceit of this theme is that games can mean many, many different things to many different people, and can start addictions or love affairs with the medium for numerous reasons. Pick one that’s special to you, and then talk about why that game or games had such an impact on you, and what that impact was.
