Mortal Kombat 11 hasn’t even been out a full week yet and modders have worked there magic. During the story events of NetherRealm’s latest gorefest, players will encounter a few characters that aren’t selectable on the roster. While it was pretty obvious that the big bad, Kronika, wouldn’t be playable, two other characters have driven fans mad by their absence. This is your warning if you wish to remain free of spoilers because I’ll be talking about them below.

For those unaware, fan favorites Cyrax and Sektor make an appearance in MK11’s story mode. Similar to how Mortal Kombat X included a couple of characters from the previous entry, these fighters are not selectable in any fashion. They have brand new character models, a full move roster, and special moves, but they cannot be chosen.

Even though the characters don’t have a major role in MK11’s plot, they are clearly fleshed out beyond simple moves. The excuse in MKX could have been because of the different variations introduced over Mortal Kombat 2011, but it really doesn’t make sense this time. Triborg was one of the DLC characters in X and its different variations were of each cyber ninja. Even if NetherRealm didn’t want to develop different versions of each robot, they could have easily thrown fans a bone with Triborg.

Kronika at least falls in line with the series past. Boss characters are typically not selectable in MK games (even if Mortal Kombat 4, Armageddon and even X had them playable). It’s still odd considering she has a fatal blow and fatality, but balancing her was likely a nightmare. On harder difficulties, she’s a total pain in the ass, so I can understand it a bit.

Still, one can’t help but think that NetherRealm is holding back on these characters for DLC. While X only made one of its NPCs a DLC character, the thought is still there. It’s also just baffling since mods exist to make them playable. Whatever the real reason beyond this decision, at least PC users can now try them out.
