Nintendo man shockingly says Nintendo product is okay!
Game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has reemphasized his belief that the Wii U is going to be okay, despite its less-than-overwhelming performance. Predicting a long future, the Nintendo brain says he’s not worried about the system’s lifespan.
“I think that the Wii U still has a long future,” he told the New York Times. “We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.
“Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet.”
At this stage, I think it’s fair to say that Nintendo’s dream of the Wii U being this “ideal family device” is unlikely to come true now. It didn’t have that sudden craze factor the Wii had, and I don’t believe it’ll suddenly get it now. That’s not to say it can’t still do well, but the “gather around and watch” element Miyamoto believes is going to happen? The moment for that has passed, methinks.
