Shigeru Miyamoto is legendary for creating some of the most memorable and revered character in all of videogames. Mario, Donkey Kong, Link … and some others. However, Miyamoto’s current commitment to being just a little pretentious continues, stating that environments are also characters, and that Wii Sports Resort‘s Wuhu Island could be the next Mario.

“… One part of Nintendo’s business has been creating a whole host of characters which we have then licensed out,” explains the impish designer. “But I’ve always thought, seeing as we are a games company, that in addition to characters resembling people, why couldn’t we also turn the actual stages of games into characters?

“We really polished up the island, turned it into a resort and actually made the location into a kind of character. This will then lead to a range of island series.”

Miyamoto believes that Wuhu Island could lead all manner of games, and that “it will be fun to see all the ideas that we can come up with.” It’s kind of sad that the man who helped shape Hyrule is now busting a nut over a rather mawkish resort island, but this is how Nintendo earns its scratch these days, and more power to ’em.
