Mistwalker to cancel third project thanks to the economy

This “economic crisis” business is funny when it happens to morons who put too much on their credit card and like spending money they don’t have, but when it affects Mistwalker, developer of arguably the best RPG of 2008, I start to give a crap.

AQ Interactive has announced that the third of Hironobu Sakaguchi’s planned Xbox 360 titles, Cry On, has been canceled. Cry On was an action RPG with a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack and character designs courtesy of Kimihiko Fujisaka. The Lost Odyssey studio was to work with Cavia, but the game’s publisher no longer considers Cry On a wise investment.

“AQI decided to cancel the project after analyzing the current market environment and forecasts for the future,” stated an AQ rep. “We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release.”

To be honest, I hadn’t heard of Cry On until now, but it’s a real shame because I think Mistwalker has serious potential as a Square Enix alternative. Unfortunately, potential is a risky investment, and risk is a terrifying prospect to publishers now more than ever before.
