Minecraft-inspired Lords of Uberdark looks delightful

[Update 8/7 Noon EST: Donation goal surpassed at $21,375 of $20,000 with 9 hours to go.]

Minecraft has been a quickly rising hit over the past year. The game centers around mining, and building, and more generally, simply surviving. This has led to one of the few complaints of the game to some people, with the lack of any clear cut goals. My attention was recently brought to the work-in-progress Lords of Uberdark, which seeks to take the mining and building aspects of Minecraft and apply them to a team-based real-time-strategy formula.

A lot of work seems to be done so far, and a lot of donations have been acquired though Kickstarter. The terrain deformation seems to be in place, and looks really smooth based on the teaser videos. The art style also looks nice with its cell-shaded look.

Developer Aaron Bishop has a small list of what he wants to add to the game though, including grappling hooks, an item-making system, Dorfs, Goblins, better collision detection and resolution, and multiplayer support.

So far he’s received $17,145 out of a goal of $20,000. Unfortunately, this puts him short for the Kickstarter deadline of August 7th. On the bright side, a single-player alpha is intended for release on August 10th even if the mark isn’t met. Donations of at least $10 to the Kickstarter will receive a licensed copy of the game when it is finally completed.

[Thanks, Oskari]
