As the second film in The Hobbit trilogy is set to release next month, WB Games is gearing up for its return to Middle-earth. In the upcoming December issue of Game Informer, the publisher lays out its vision for this brand new sandbox action/RPG developed by Monolith, coming to the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.

Taking place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor introduces a brand new character named Talion, a human ranger who is tasked with venturing into the land of Mordor. Although the details are a bit limited, the developers at Monolith state that players will freely explore the dark lands while battling hordes of monsters, and strengthening Talion’s abilities. An interesting addition to the game is called the Nemesis system, which plans to bring a new approach to character interaction, battles, and storytelling. In one instance, enemies that escape from battles will return for revenge more powerful than ever.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor looks to be a pretty ambitious title. It’s interesting to see Monolith make a game that’s not a first-person shooter, and an sandbox action/RPG set in Mordor? Count me in!
