Metal Gear Solid V: Multiplayer, second screens, & more

We have some new, surprising information about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine, longtime series director Hideo Kojima detailed some surprises, all of which seem to stem from the game’s open world format that eschews the style of its linear predecessors. “Distance is a very big factor,” Kojima said. “In the trailer you saw Snake riding a horse, but you can also walk to a mission or take another mode of transport.”

All the freedom is up to you and there are no rules [like] the linear games in the past. You can use smartphones and tablets to interact with the world. That’s why we did an open world, because we thought about all these interactions on multiple devices.

It’s a bit weird to hear second screen functionality touted by someone not peddling Xbox One exclusive SmartGlass tech or a Wii U title. More surprising is that, “Using tablets and smartphones you can also enjoy MGS V and create user-generated missions within the world.” So, user-generated content, perhaps of a similar nature to Infamous 2?

Multiplayer is also coming back. It’s being developed by Kojima Productions’ new LA studio that it announced at GDC this year. It has a cool red logo and seems to have just officially opened today. Everybody’s working for the weekend, I guess.
