Metal Gear Online opens Japanese beta (update)

Konami just held a Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Party (where’s my invite?) and there they announced Metal Gear Online, an upcoming PS3 title that lets gamers battle in the Metal Gear Solid 4 world. You remember the online component of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, right? It’s like that, only better. There is no official release date yet, but a closed beta test begins August 20th and ends September 3rd.

The application process begins today and runs until August 6th. Only 3,000 applicants will be chosen from all that apply, and it looks to be a Japan-only affair. The MGO Beta web page is up now, and is accepting entries, but it looks as if it requires a ‘Konami ID’ and ‘Konami ID password’ on top  of a PlayStation Network user name.

It looks like Japan will get the first taste of MGS4 gameplay and visuals. For now, let’s keep our fingers crossed for an international beta and and continue to stare longingly at the tiny, stamp-sized pictures of Metal Gear Online on this page.
