Mega Man #20 pops the bubbly for Mega’s 25th birthday

It appears as though I’ve skipped a few solicitations for upcoming Mega Man comic issues, notwithstanding the Sonic / Mega Man crossover business. I know, right? For shame!

The latest Archie Mega Man I’ve discussed with you guys has been #17, the start of a two-part mini-arc that explores Proto Man’s origins. I then failed to share #19, a one-shot issue that plants the ladies of the series in the spotlight and marks the introduction of Splash Woman into the comic universe.

Which brings us to #20, another one-shot entitled “Rock of Ages,” that will release in December in time for the franchise’s 25th anniversary. In this issue, Dr. Wily messes around with the time stream, sending Mega Man on a trip through history, essentially a retrospective of his gaming career. There’s also a variant cover by Archie artist Ryan Jampole which echoes Capcom’s early NES box art template. I don’t know what it is, but something about Jampole’s art seems off. I’m not totally digging it.

In addition, this month’s issue concludes the “Spiritus ex Machina” arc, which means you can expect a bound volume of all four issues in December as well. And speaking of bound volumes, Volume 3 will be out later this month. It’s the Mega Man 2 adaptation, so it might be a good gateway for those who haven’t started following the series yet.
