During the Dec. 4 celebration of Total War‘s 25th birthday, we got several cool and exciting announcements, including the fabled Medieval 3, which has officially been acknowledged.
Though that game is probably half a decade away, it’s being in early pre-production and all that jazz, we’re going to get another Total War game much sooner. Mentioned briefly at the end of the presentation, this upcoming Total War is going to be revealed to the world at this year’s Game Awards event, and is the “most ambitious” game in the franchise.

However, we’re going to have to wait for a week to actually figure out what it’s about. Many are already speculating on two possible franchises: Star Wars or Warhammer 40K. Both are quite similar in scope and genre and take place across a whole galaxy, with star-faring civilizations embroiled in warfare.
Of course, the latter ups the ante in every imaginable way, as you can seldom say that Star Wars has planet-sized ships that literally bombard worlds with churches while playing ecclesiastical music into their atmospheres. But yeah, Star Wars is cool too, I guess.
The very fact that Creative Assembly is gatekeeping the announcement and saving it for the biggest gaming event of the year certainly does signal that a huge franchise is in question. Whether it’s Star Wars, 40K, or even something like The Lord of the Rings, it’s safe to say we’re in for a treat.
And with the new engine, which can handle things much better than what CA has used thus far, it could very well be the inaugural title of a new era, one where Total War is much deeper, complex, and ambitious than before. Or I could just be coping and imagining what could have been.
We’ll meet on Dec. 11.
