September 2026 was a massive month for new game releases, and one game stood out among the rest as the top title when it comes to projected sales.
Despite only being available on PlayStation 5 and having what some would consider mixed reviews (75 on Metacritic), Marvel’s Wolverine outlasted a slew of other big-name releases in the month, showcasing both the staying power of the IP and potentially faith in Insomniac Games as a developer.

The hairy, clawed mutant stood atop a pile of a number of titles in the month, including perennially-popular sports titles like NBA 2K27, EA Sports FC 27, and Madden NFL 27, but also several new high-profile releases like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. The info above is according to Mat Piscatella and Circana, who said that the PS5 reached its “highest point” in “dollar share of the video game hardware market” since May 2025 alongside the new game.
However, Wolverine’s launch month was not strong enough for it to crack the top 10 of games sold this year so far. That honor lies with NBA 2K27, now edging out Resident Evil: Requiem to be the top-selling game of the year, according to Circana’s data.
This chart will likely change quite a bit by the end of the year with several other new high-profile releases, like Grand Theft Auto 6, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake all likely gunning for top spots.
I personally enjoyed my time with Wolverine, as I felt it satisfied the fantasy of playing as the iconic character, along with having top-notch visuals and performances from its cast. It was definitely not without its faults, like repetitive combat, boring character designs, and a story that couldn’t quite nail its landing, but I still feel the game is worth playing, scoring it an 8/10.
