Mama said knock you out: Debut trailer for EA Sports’ FaceBreaker

I’m obviously a huge sports fan, and accordingly, I enjoy sports sims. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t also love games like NFL Blitz or NBA Jam, and I’m well aware that many Dtoiders don’t give a damn about a sports game unless it has special powerups and other outrageous, surreal features. If you’re nodding your head as you’re reading this, then EA has got something for you: a new IP called FaceBreaker.

We don’t have much information on the game, but from the first screenshots and press release way back at the end of January, we gathered that it will be an arcade boxing title in the vein of Punch-Out!! for the NES. In fact, if you check out the first trailer above, you may notice that a few of the 11 characters (that’s how many I counted, anyway) bear some resemblance to the pugilists in that 8-bit classic. Bald Bull and Don Flamenco, anyone?

I really like the way this game looks so far. I’m not a fan of boxing; I guess I’m not your typical alpha male, but watching two people beat the living daylights out of each other has no appeal to me whatsoever. However, if I can build up a “special” bar over the course of a fight and unleash a lethal Shoryuken-esque spinning uppercut by pressing R1 or something, then count me in.

FaceBreaker, developed by EA Canada and published by EA, will be out this year for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii; for more information, hit up the game’s official website at http://www.easports.com/facebreaker/.

[Thanks, Justin!]
