Magic: The Gathering Xbox LIVE Arcade title hitting June 17

A fresh Magic: The Gathering game is releasing on Xbox LIVE Arcade soon.

Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast announced the downloadable title Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers would hit Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Marketplace on June 17. The launch will accompany two events — Game with Fame and Game with Developers — that allow early purchasers to play the game against the studio responsible for the title as well as Magic: The Gathering (card game) champions.

Duels of the Planeswalkers was originally announced August 28 last year and it will be the first official Magic: The Gathering game since the release of Magic: The Gathering — Battlegrounds in 2003.

According to the Duels of the Planeswalkers official Web site, the game will feature eight “unique” player decks, single and multiplayer campaigns, and ranked cooperative play.

As an added bonus, anyone who buys the game can redeem a code for an exclusive Magic: The Gathering card called the Garruk Wildspeaker Planeswalker.

The first screenshots of the game are available in the gallery below. Judging purely from the images, it appears as if Duels of the Planeswalkers is a digital version of the tabletop game — not a bad option if you’re tired of buying cards or hanging out at the creepy shops that sell them.
