The bloody thing’s only just come out!
Star Wars: Battlefront is out today in the US (Chris was kind of “meh” about it), and there’s still a whole ridiculously expensive season pass of content to come out. But don’t let that almost £100 purchase get you down, because EA is already talking about the sequel! And the sequels to come for the next 10 years!
Talking at the UBS Global Technology Conference, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen gave a better idea of what’s to come during EA’s 10 year deal with Disney on Star Wars games. The answer? Lots more Battlefront, mainly. Oh, and mobile games.
We struck a licensing deal with Disney a few years back that’s almost ten years in length. The game that comes out tomorrow, Star Wars Battlefront, is a traditional first-person style shooter game. Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC. It’s a huge opportunity for us.
The 10 year deal covers every Star Wars film that is either out or will come out in the next decade. That includes the already released six films and the upcoming trilogy, as well as any and all spin-offs that are bound to happen.
That doesn’t mean EA is planning on making movie tie-ins, however. So don’t expect a Katamari Damacy clone starring BB-8 or anything:
The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is it’s almost unlimited in what you can do with it. We know Disney has done a great job with other franchises and we believe they’ll do the same with Star Wars over time in delivering new worlds, new characters, new vehicles, all the things that make great video games. Our goal is not to make video games directly about the movies, it’s to use the IP in the movie to make great, exciting games.
So, next ten years will be lots of Battlefront, probably some new focus on the Knights of the Old Republic series outside of the MMO, and lots and lots and lots of mobile games.
Oh, and hopefully one where you play as Sith Lord Jar-Jar.
