Klei’s ‘The Screecher’ mod for Don’t Starve is spooky

Yes, I jumped

Klei Entertainment has added a free horror mod to Don’t Starve, accessible from the main menu. It’s called “The Screecher” and while there are shared elements with the core game — we, the player, are still stranded in the wilderness for instance — this is much different. Much creepier. For starters, it uses a new third-person perspective.

While I’ve embedded a video playthrough below for those of you curious to see what this is all about, I’d suggest going in fresh with your own copy of Don’t Starve. It’s got a vibe similar to the recent crop of Slenderman games where you’re going along collecting items and creepy things happen around you. Seeing that on YouTube will ruin much of the surprise. That ending!

This week is also a good time to get into the game since it’s half price ($7.49) on Steam. Fraser Brown reviewed it for us, calling it infuriating but empowering. It’s pretty great!
