Don’t call it a comeback…

Tate Multimedia has finally revealed a launch date for its funky-looking platformer Kao the Kangaroo. The forgotten hero will make his grand return on May 27, when the new adventure bounces onto PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch… And you know what? He ain’t looking too shabby.

“We’ve been blown away by the response we’ve had from gamers since we announced Kao the Kangaroo was making a return earlier this year,” writes studio head Kaja Borowko in a press release. “With this new chapter, we’ve set out to make sure the new Kao the Kangaroo both honours his previous outings and offers fresh, contemporary gameplay for fans new and old alike. This is a complete reboot for Kao, and we can’t wait to see how people take to it at launch!”

Not a remaster nor a reboot, Kao the Kangaroo is a brand new sequel to early releases Kao the Kangaroo and Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2. The new title will see our hard-punchin’ hero travel the globe in search of his missing sister, taking time out to square off with the greatest fighters from around the world. Combining his powerful jumping abilities with his… erm… “magical boxing gloves”, Kao is looking to make a massive impact on his enemies and on 3D platform game fans at large.

As I have noted before, the new Kao the Kangaroo is kind of shameless in its resemblance to more popular franchises such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. But I do think that the early footage has a lot of promise, and while Kao might not exactly be a household name, this new adventure looks like it will pack enough punch to please the kanga’s faithful cult following, as well as video game fans at large. And at a budget price of $29.99, it might well be worth sticking on your summer radar.

Kao the Kangaroo launches May 27 on PS4, PC (via Steam), Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
