An easy game of the show for many Destructoid editors, Retro City Rampage was among the many indie titles that kicked absolute ass at PAX Prime. Built from the ground up with gaming nerds in mind, this bizarre blend of Grand Theft Auto attitude and NES aesthetic is looking like an absolute treat.
Gameplay-wise, Retro City Rampage feels a lot like the original top-down GTA games. As you embark on missions, you can jack cars, ride around the city, and use a huge variety of melee and ranged weapons to cause chaos. One welcome addition is an auto-targeting system that really helps the game out.
The game’s a little stiff to control, though that may be a deliberate retro trapping. In any case, the word I would use to describe Retro City Rampage is “cute.” With its constant references to old school games like Duck Hunt, Frogger and Metal Gear, this is an adorable little title that will make nostalgic gamers grin.
