Too small for CDs though

As part of yesterday’s Mega Drive Mini live stream, in which we learned of the final 12 games headed to the tiny retro console, Sega also revealed the existence of a fun Japanese “Tower” variant, which will include cute Mega CD and 32X add-ons.

If that wasn’t enough, the tower also features a fake Sonic & Knuckles “lock-on” cartridge, as well as a fake Sonic the Hedgehog cart to insert into that. Now obviously, these add-ons aren’t functioning items, and are purely for fun aesthetics, but for those of you who remember the “Tower of Power” that the Mega Drive/Genesis became in its twilight years, The Mega Drive Tower Mini is a neat, if somewhat goofy, flashback.

Unfortunately, the full kit is currently only confirmed for Japanese release, with pre-orders already live on Amazon Japan. Hopefully the tower will head west, so we can all reminisce about the joys of having far too many cables lying around and sockets in use, just so you could play Corpse Killer.

The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Mini launches worldwide September 19, priced around $80/£70.
