Indie-developer FPS/RPG E.Y.E. is something to watch

French indie developer Streum on Studio is still working on E.Y.E., an FPS/RPG hybrid built with the innards of the Source engine. A little bit Deus Ex with a splash of System Shock and perhaps even F.E.A.R., the title aims to please those with an appetite for experience points, destruction and covert action. And just to be clear, this isn’t a mod — despite being small, the studio’s plans for E.Y.E. are gargantuan.

As of the release of the press materials — which are rather dated — we’re seeing plans for a full-featured game led by an outlandish sci-fi narrative. Players are to assume control of an elite monk warrior charged with uncovering a traitor while two warring factions do their, you know, warring thing. This elite monk warrior won’t be fighting with his hands, by the way — he’ll have access to over 25 guns, cybernetic implants, and even skills.

As players progress, these skills are enhanced.

The above video (don’t mind the date, it was just delayed until, possibly the end of the year) and the images below should give you a better sense of the game, although its official Web site is a great supplement if you’re intrigued.

In addition to having a simple campaign mode, plans are in place for E.Y.E. to be supplement by three cooperative modes: a traditional two-player variant, an eight-player variant, and perhaps something of an adversarial mode where players race and fight each other to fulfill a “series of objectives.”

Sounds big, and it is. But that isn’t the end of it. Streum is creating a psychological trauma component, a karma component, a research and development component, and a dynamic mission system with random AI squad spawns.

It’s out there, but E.Y.E. looks good for an indie videogame. We’ll be keeping our EYES on this one. Heh. Heh.

E.Y.E. doesn’t have a solid release, but it could hit before the end of this year on the PC. Streum wants to release it on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well.
