So long, IPL
Following the cancellation of the IGN Pro League 6 due to an inability “to commit the resources required to run another major independent event,” a statement was released that read “You should also know that we are working on finding a new home for the IPL team and IGN will continue to broadcast partner tournaments in the future.” Indeed, a home has been found.
None other than StarCraft developer Blizzard has stepped up to purchase IPL technology and assets. Current staff members will join a team in San Francisco “whose primary focus will be on creating high-quality web and mobile content in support of Blizzard games,” according to IGN.
“This is a team of passionate gamers with a proven track record, and we’re looking forward to now leveraging their expertise and technology to support a variety of online efforts,” said Blizzard executive VP of publishing Itzik Ben-Bassat. Not surprisingly, the company has “no plans to continue operation of the IPL business.”
