I like everything I’ve seen about Hyper Light Drifter

So far, so good

Enough Kickstarter links come in that, on average, it probably takes a good 15 seconds for me to scan a pitch and know if it’s something I want to share. In the case of Hyper Light Drifter, my reaction was instantaneous — I’m a fan of pixel art, and its style does not disappoint. Knowing that Samurai Gunn‘s Beau Blyth and Disasterpeace are a part of the project inspires confidence, but it’s this explanation by lead designer Alex Preston that has me most on board:

“Visions for this game have been fluttering in my skull for ages; something dark and fantastic, with giant forests to navigate, huge floating structures to explore, deep crumbling ruins to loot, massive throngs of enemies to rend, and behemoths both flesh and mechanical to overcome. I want it all to be as beautiful as possible, forging color with the dark and eerie wastes and intimidating landscapes. It plays like the best parts of A Link to the Past and Diablo, evolved: lightning fast combat, more mobility, an array of tactical options, more numerous and intelligent enemies, and a larger world with a twisted past to do it all in.”

For the time being, Hyper Light Drifter is looking at a mid-2014 launch with, yes, a Steam version if at all possible. Preston says he’d “love to expand to other platforms” as well. The base funding goal is $27,000, but there are a few notable stretch goals: hiring an animator ($64,000), a full soundtrack ($75,000), and a cooperative campaign ($100,000).
