I don’t think I’ll mind getting lost in The Witness

Mmm this looks good

I’m looking out my window as I type this and what I see is a mostly overcast sky and lots of drab grays and blues. It’s sleepy. What I’d rather be looking at are these warm, teeming-with-life screenshots from Jonathan Blow’s exploration-puzzler The Witness.

“Color was a big challenge in getting the area to look nice, since it is a marsh research facility with lots of crazy colored algae pools…there was a high risk of making it look like a clown exploded on it,” wrote artist Orsi Spanyol. “With some careful color choices, attention to every detail and blocking in the views on a step by step basis, however, I think we managed to avoid that risk and succeeded in creating a pleasant, colorful area.”

It feels as if The Witness has flown under the radar somewhat, perhaps intentionally. I’m still not entirely sure what it will entail, but I like everything that’s been shown of the game and it’s apparently quite lengthy. Mid-2014 is what the official site says for a release date. Drat.
