At its core, Subnautica 2 is a survival game, which means your character will constantly fight dehydration, hunger, and the ocean’s predators. Although water exists in abundance, food is its own separate challenge, especially early on when you experience “digestive incompatibility” with most fish.

Although this incompatibility makes it difficult to eat food early on, you can fix this after finding a specific POI. Here’s a complete step-by-step to unlocking digestion in Subnautica 2.

How to unlock Digestion in Subnautica 2

Eating food in Subnautica 2 without experiencing negative side effects requires unlocking the Digestion Adaptation from an Angel Comb bulb. After crash-landing into the ocean, head directly north until you find the Angel Comb 150 meters away from your Lifepod. Sticking your hand into it will unlock the Digestion Adaptation, allowing you to eat food you find within the ocean.

In the same area, you’ll also find an “Anita” databank entry and a broken Habitat Builder tool on the table that you can scan using your scanner. Finding both Habitat Builders will unlock the tool’s blueprint, letting you craft it at your Fabricator once you acquire its required materials.

During Subnautica 2’s tutorial, you find your first Angel Comb shortly after waking up. This comb’s bulb gave your character pressure tolerance, allowing you to withstand the planet’s air. More importantly, it introduced us to adaptation and genetic compatibility.

While the tutorial’s version was just a pink bulb sitting on the ground, this one you encounter in the ocean grows out of a large green plant. You’ll also find aggressive fish such as Hammerheads and Nibbler Mango around the Angel Comb, so watch where you swim as you explore the area.

Picking up this second Angel Comb bulb lets you eat wild fish without suffering any incompatibility consequences. Eating the fish raw can help you in a pinch at the cost of reducing your water and health, while cooking them at a Fabricator will quickly become a reliable early-game food source until you expand your base and unlock better recipes.
