How to spawn CEs in The Bozjan Southern Front and Zadnor in Final Fantasy XIV

From mobs to Duels, here's everything you need to know

When it comes to leveling alternative Jobs in Final Fantasy XIV, few things are more time effective than the Bozjan Southern Front and Zadnor. Unlocked after level 71, the Field Operations instances offer huge amounts of EXP, especially for completing Critical Engagements (CEs).

CEs are, effectively, large-scale boss battles that spawn on the field of battle, during which you battle a particularly difficult enemy. These battles can be fought by up to 72 players (the maximum number in an instance) and vary in difficulty depending on how many people are in the instance – the more people are in the instance, the harder the CE becomes to complete.

Most CEs are spawned after either completing a certain Skirmish (FATE) or by killing a certain type of mob enemy within the instance, each of which has a specific spawn location in one of the zones in either Bozja or Zadnor. Some of the CEs, such as Duels, are spawned through the completion of precious CEs.

With 16 CEs each in both Bozja and Zadnor, this seems like a lot to remember but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

How to register for CEs in the Bozjan Southern Front and Zadnor in FFXIV

Each type of CE has its own method to register. Large Scale CEs, which are accessible to anyone within an instance who has access, are registered via Resistance Recruitment. If you’re in a party, only the leader of the party can register all members for the CE. If your party leader registers you for the CE, you don’t have to participate. Once the CE starts, a bell sound will play and you can then choose whether or not to deploy into the fight.

Duel CEs are slightly different. If the spawn conditions are met (by completing a Large Scale CE without taking avoidable damage), anyone who met this condition will be invited to take part in the Duel via a pop-up on the screen. Only one player who registers for the Duel will be chosen to participate.

The Battle of Castrum Lacus Litore

The Battle of Castrum Lacus Litore, regularly shortened to simply ‘Castrum’ or ‘CLL’ within an instance, is technically not a CE but it does have some spawn conditions:

  • A minimum of 12 players with Castrum unlocked are needed within the instance before it will spawn
  • A spawn will automatically appear one hour after the creation of a new instance and then every 90 minutes until the instance is closed down
  • Completing Skirmishes and CEs decreases the spawn timer

The Dalriada

The Dalriada, often shortened to simply ‘Dal’, is the Zadnor equivalent of Castrum in Bozja. While Castrum requires a minimum of 12 people who have it unlocked within an instance, Dalriada requires only eight players who have it unlocked. The other spawn conditions are the same.
