How to Sell Ships in Starfield

Shrink your fleet and make some money.

Spaceships play an important role in Starfield. You use your ships to sail to new solar systems and progress the story. They also come in handy when space pirates are attacking you and need to fight back. Spaceships don’t come cheap, but after accumulating riches and perhaps even stealing a few crafts, you may find you have more ships than you need. When you reach this point, it’s a good idea to start selling them.

The easiest way to get rid of a ship is to visit a settlement spaceport. There, you’ll find a Ship Services Technician willing to repair or modify your ship. Simply walk up to him and speak to him, then select the “Let me see what ships you have for sale” dialogue option. This will open up a menu where you can purchase new ships. Press Y on Xbox Series X/S or R on PC to bring up your ships, which you can then sell. You’ll see the value of your ship at the bottom left corner of the screen, next to its mass.

Having trouble finding a spaceport? Try these convenient spots:

  • Akila City – Akila is a bustling city founded by the Coe family. It’s located on the planet Akila where you’ll do quite a few missions. You’ll find the planet in the Cheyenne system.
  • New Atlantis – This’ll probably be the spaceport you use the most, as New Atlantis is where you’ll find the Lodge. The city’s located on Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system.
  • Neon – This bustling city is the only settlement on the planet Volii Alpha in the Volii system.

Selling spaceships in Starfield

There are a few things you should know about the ship-selling process. Firstly, you can only sell spaceships you have registered, which is a costly process that is necessary if you have, for example, acquired your vehicle through theft. Secondly, the Frontier technically belongs to Constellation, so you can’t sell it.

Lastly, you need at least one ship at all times, so you can’t sell the ship designated as your home ship. To change which spaceship is designated your home ship, speak to the technician and select the “I’d like to view or modify my ships” option. When you’ve found the ship you’d like to be your main one, select the “make home ship” option.

Selling your ships is a good way to make big money fast. However, don’t sell too many, as it is helpful to have a variety of ships in your fleet. Some might excel at space combat while others are more suited to carrying plenty of cargo and hiding contraband.
