How to light up dark places in Tears of the Kingdom (TotK)

You have options!

Given that the depths are a big focus in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it’s important that you learn how to shed some light on the situation. Here’s how to illuminate dark areas thanks to a key item: Brightbloom seeds.

You can either toss Brightbloom seeds manually or fuse them to arrows to see in the dark

The simplest method of illuminating areas is to attach a Brightbloom seed to an arrow.

Press RT to bring out your bow, then press up on the d-pad to select Brightbloom seeds. Let go of the d-pad to knock the Brightbloom arrow. Let it rip anywhere you want, and the seed will blossom, creating a light source. Rinse and repeat wherever you need light, noting that the seed itself will brighten up a chunk of the area (meaning, you can spread out your shots a bit to cover more ground).

If you’re out of arrows, don’t fret! Brightbloom seeds can be chucked manually, which allows them to sprout and create a makeshift light source. Remember this when you’re exploring the depths, as Brightbloom seeds are generally well-stocked in dark areas.

The Lightning Temple companion ability works as a “sonar” of sorts

Once you complete the Lightning Temple, you’ll acquire a new ability that allows Link to power up his arrows with a massive amount of electricity.

While this power is extremely useful for taking out enemies, it’s also great for seeing in the dark. Initiating the ability will create a “sonar” effect, which allows you to spot walls, ledges, and other structures within the depths. The best part is that you can use it constantly, as the cooldown is never reset as long as you don’t trigger it with an arrow shot!

The Bright Elixir is another cheap option

A Bright Elixir can shed some light on the depths by providing a latent glow. To create a Bright Elixir, you’ll need to mix a monster part with a Deep Firefly. Deep Fireflies are located in the depths.

The Miner’s set provides some passive light

Finally, if you’re really going to be going hard in the depths, you’ll want to use the Miner’s outfit set, which consists of three pieces, all found in the depths. All three pieces provide a progressive amount of light, which is a great baseline for exploring the depths.

  • The helm can be found at the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine
  • The legs are in the Hylia Canyon Mine
  • The chest is in the Daphnes Canyon Mine

We have a full breakdown of how to get each piece of the Miner’s outfit here.
