How to get the Rebreather in Sons of the Forest

Breathe and then Rebreathe

There’s a lot of lakes and caves in Sons of the Forest with hidden secrets that can only be accessed with a Rebreather. Unfortunately, getting the Rebreather is fraught with danger and can be hard work. Here’s what you need to know.

It’s possible, though inadvisable, to go swimming without the Rebreather. There’s a distinct possibility of death though, as with most things in the game, and you’re not likely to get very far even if you do manage to survive. The Rebreather allows you not only to go further underwater, but also enables you to find hidden secrets which would otherwise elude you.

How to find the Rebreather in Sons of the Forest

The entrance to Cave A, where the Rebreather is located, can be found on the Western side of the large inlet right at the top of the map. If you see a bunch of corpses skewered on pikes, you’ll know that you’re in the right place. Once you’ve found the entrance, use your Axe to break through the boards and slip inside.

Once you’re inside the cave, equip your Torch. Just as you enter the cave, you’ll find some items to pick up, including an Air Tank – pick this up, you’ll need it when you find the Rebreather.

Head deeper into the cave until you come across another section that’s lit up by blue light. Here, the ceiling will drop and at first it may seem as though you’ve gone the wrong way. Rest assured, you haven’t. Simply crouch down and squeeze through the gap to make your way to the next area.

The path from here is pretty linear. You’ll meet your first enemies in the room with a floating ring, but they’re not too difficult to get past and don’t even need to be fought at all if you’re not feeling up to it. Simply run past them until you find that the path splits off in two directions.

Now, while you’re supposed to follow the water and  go left here, I’d recommend going right first before backtracking to this point. If you go right, you can find a body hanging from the ceiling and this is where you find the Stun Gun. However, the right path is filled with a lot of enemies, so make sure to only go this way if you’re equipped and ready for a fight.

Once you’ve taken the left path, you’ll find that it’s a pretty linear route and you can only really go one way. Keep proceeding until you come to another low section of cave roof. Again, duck under this and once you’re through, you’ll be in the right room to pick up the Rebreather, but be very careful.

While it may be tempting to jump into the water below, there are Sharks in this water and I would strongly advise against diving in to join them, unless you want to end up like the limbs on the side of the water. Head right from the beginning of this room, continuing until you reach the bottom of the cave. Here, you’ll find the Rebreather, which is good, because you need it to get out of the cave.

If you’ve got a gun with you, kill the Sharks before entering the water. If not, hey even if you die, you’ve still found the Rebreather, so there’s that?
