Update 1.6 includes a secret way to get more Lucky Purple Shorts in Stardew Valley

Curse of the malevolent underpants

Mayor Lewis’ Purple Shorts have been a thing in Stardew Valley since the very beginning. At this point, they’re a fan favorite easter egg and have divided players between doing the right thing and, at worst, extorting the Mayor of Pelican Town.

Until now, once you picked up Mayor Lewis’ Lucky Purple Shorts in Marnie’s bedroom, you had a choice; you could either give them back to Mayor Lewis and save him the embarrassment of having his terribly hidden relationship with Marnie become even more talked about, or keep them for yourself.

What can you do with Purple Shorts in Stardew Valley?

Why would you want to keep Mayor Lewis’ underpants for yourself? Well, you can do a few things with them:

  • Put them in the Pot Luck Soup at the Luau for a secret, understandably dismayed, dialogue from the Governor
  • Extort Mayor Lewis by including them as part of your Grange Display at the Stardew Valley Fair in order to receive 750 Star Tokens as a bribe to keep your mouth shut about the aforementioned worst-kept-secret relationship
  • Tailor them with a Gold Bar in order to get Trimmed Lucky Purple Shorts which can be worn
  • Embarrass both Marnie and Mayor Lewis by wearing the shorts around them

But now, you can give Mayor Lewis the shorts back and still experience all of these things, because update 1.6 added a new way to get more Purple Shorts.

In order to get more Purple Shorts, you’ll need to achieve a couple of things:

  • Reach friendship level 4 with Mayor Lewis in order to unlock his bedroom
  • Reach Mining level 2 in order to unlock the Staircase recipe.

Once you’ve achieved these, make a Staircase using 99 Stone and then head to Mayor Lewis’ house. Go into his bedroom and place the Staircase down before interacting with it in order to descend into a new cellar area.

This area is filled with Barrels and other obstacles which form a maze, but if you look in the bottom left corner you’ll see a pair of Purple Shorts just lying there waiting to be taken. Make your way through the maze and then pick up the shorts, placing them in your inventory.

Once you’ve picked up the Purple Shorts, a floating and apparently very angry pair of Purple Shorts will appear towards the entrance to the cellar. You need to make your way back through the maze while avoiding these malevolent underpants because if they reach you they will attack and do a large amount of damage. I’d recommend taking some food with you just in case you need some quick healing.

Once you’ve escaped the cursed pants, make your way out of Lewis’ house and voila, you have more Lucky Purple Shorts. If you want to stockpile the item, and I’m not sure why you would but to each their own, you can repeat this process as many times as you like.
