There’s a new weapon to use in Doom: The Dark Ages, as the Revelations DLC has added the Chain Spear to our arsenal. This magical spear is a hybrid melee option that can be used in both offense and defense (it replaces your Shield).
Unfortunately, there’s a bug that will prevent you from using it properly. Thankfully, there’s an easy fix for the problem.
How to use the Chain Spear in Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations
You obtain the Chain Spear pretty early in the second Chapter: Purgatory. The first piece of action in the second chapter is to pick it up and replace your broken Shield.
The spear not only does damage, but it also allows you to move across the platforms. Unfortunately, the game will show “??” as the controls. No, pressing the Question mark key on your keyboard won’t work. In fact, this is a bug where there’s no default control assigned to the weapon.
To resolve the issue, go to your keyboard settings. You’ll find that the Chain Spear doesn’t have a single assigned. Start assigning all the controls to remove “??” wherever you can spot. Try not to use key binds that are already in use, since they can cause confusion. You should assign all the controls before you proceed further into the Purgatory.
You will now be able to use the weapon as intended by pressing the correct buttons. I am unsure as to how this bug even exists in the first place, or if it will ever get fixed. However, you can try the fix I mentioned to proceed further into the DLC.
