The tactical camera (overhead or top-down, if you prefer) can be useful in Baldur’s Gate 3 if you’re accustomed to looking over a grid-based Dungeons & Dragons map or want to carefully plan your character’s footsteps. But when it becomes stuck, what do you do?
Backing up, if you’re here looking at this guide, there’s a good chance that you’ve done this on accident. One moment you’ve got a good view of your character’s butt, then suddenly, the camera wants to focus on their hair follicles. This is easy to do by mistake because the camera is bound to a hot-key. It’s the only real way to activate it.
By default, the key is ‘o.’ However, all actions within Baldur’s Gate 3 are bindable. Hit ‘o’, and if that doesn’t do anything, open the settings menu and go to the controls tab. Right at the top of the list should be Toggle Tactical Camera. If you’ve already pressed the key and it didn’t work, you can try rebinding it to something else and trying again. However, I’ve got a better solution.
Just save your game, quit to main menu, and then load your save.
When you load, the game will be at its normal angle. Even though the screenshot will show the overhead tactical camera, it doesn’t remember that and will reset it.
If neither of those things worked, then you’ve got a bigger problem. My first guess would be that a mod is interfering with the camera settings. You can try disabling your mods and trying one of the above methods. If that doesn’t work, you can try reinstalling, but I’d suggest first trying to load one of your older saves before the camera broke. If you play like most people do, you have a recent save from about five seconds ago.
If that doesn’t work, and you’re still stuck in the overhead tactical camera – whew – your computer is probably haunted. Call a leader from your chosen religious denomination.
