Where to find Opal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Opals have a chance to drop at random when mining Stone, Tin, and Copper. These lower-tier ores tend to yield the gem far more often than higher ones like Iron. To mine Tin and Copper, make sure you have a Bone Pickaxe since Stone isn’t strong enough to break through them. You can also save yourself some time by using the Detect Ore + Clay and Rocksplosion abilities, helping you mine and find these ores faster. However, you’ll need to prepare yourself with gear and weaponry, as the ores are only found in the brutal Fractured Plains.

You might need to mine these ores repeatedly before an Opal even appears. In my countless hours in-game, I’ve only seen it drop once. Some players claim they’ve never found one, even after hitting endgame. Your best bet is to reach Level 16 Mining to unlock the Gem Protector ability, which occasionally spawns gemstones while mining.

On the flip side, players who’ve reached Level 50 Mining should be cautious—Opal and other gemstones may be bugged at higher levels. Many RuneScape: Dragonwilds players report rarely seeing these gems once they’ve reached this point. This could be due to their connection with lower-tier ores, meaning higher-level miners may struggle to farm them. If this happens to you, you may want to test out a new character profile to increase your chances. With the game still in Early Access, there’s hope that the frustrating RNG and drop issues will be addressed in future updates.

How to use Opal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

You can use Opals to enhance weapons and gear at the Smithing Anvil, including Dragonfire Shield, Oak Shortbow, and Oak Longbow. You’ll stumble upon the Oak Shortbow recipe first, as it is a part of the early game builds. Fortunately, builds such as this won’t require too much Opal. So, even if you don’t find that many, you still might be able to craft at least one recipe with it.

Opals set a new standard when it comes to damage. For instance, the Longbow boasts 28 Damage, a valuable boost in the early and mid stages of the game. Beyond enhancing weapons and armor, I haven’t found much else for this gemstone. I explored the recipes in the Crafting station, and nothing showed up.

However, Opals could be used as a decoration, considering that some materials have bin items attached to them. You might just need to track down the recipe book, whether you’re venturing through the diverse regions or delving deep into the mysterious Vaults.
