How to find and defeat the Lumière Mime in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

These mimes don't mess around.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s mimes are no joke. They look eerie and creepy and can even defeat you in battle if you provoke them. The earliest one you can encounter is in Lumière during the prologue just before the pre-Expedition festival begins.

Finding Lumière’s mime, however, is only half the challenge. You’ll still need to engage in battle with it, letting you test your combat skills for the second time in your playthrough. Let’s dive into how to find and defeat this mysterious mime.

How to find the mime for the A Peculiar Encounter achievement

You’ll first encounter the Lumière Mime during Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s prologue after meeting up with Sophie. After talking with her and traveling through the crowds of people toward the harbor, you’ll find a broken Arc de Triomphe, where you can turn right to spot the mime just near a group of dancers.

The mime won’t act hostile toward you immediately. It’ll initially gesture with its hands in the air, but otherwise be safe to approach—until you walk up and question what it’s doing. Talking to the mime starts your battle, so prepare yourself before approaching it.

For an enemy you encounter during Expedition 33’s prologue, this mime can be tough if you’re unfamiliar with the game’s combat mechanics. It’ll immediately start with the mime protecting itself, giving you a chance to have your first attack before the mime retaliates.

Overall, your goal during this fight is to get Overcharge stacks by using regular attacks, dodging, and successfully parrying the mime’s attacks. Whittling down its health using Lumière Assault and regular attacks is also an option, but Overcharge can very easily knock out the mime in one fell swoop if you max out your charges.

You’ll encounter a few attacks from the Lumière Mime along the way, depending on how long the battle lasts. Its most common attack is a hand-to-hand combo, where it’ll punch you three times, inflicting a small amount of damage per hit. This is a great opportunity to obtain Overcharge progress if you can time the dodge right. Better yet, if you can time Gustave’s parry attacks, you’ll get some bonus damage in before your next turn begins.

The mime’s other possible attack is what the game calls a Strange Combo, causing the mime to whip out a hammer and hit you four times. It has similar timing to the hand-to-hand combo, but can inflict more damage if you don’t quite have the timing down for dodges. Don’t be afraid to resort to dodging if parry timing is a little too tricky at this point in your playthrough.

As long as you can dodge or parry most of the mime’s attacks, this battle shouldn’t be too much of a problem. You’ll receive a Lumière music record as a reward for defeating the mime alongside the “A Peculiar Encounter” achievement or trophy, depending on your gaming platform. If you managed to break the mime using Overcharge early in your battle, you’ll also receive the Time to Spill Some Ink achievement.
