Boats are one of the most important additions in the Rust Naval update, and you can edit them just the way you want, thanks to their modularity.

Boats are necessary if you want to explore the newly released Deep Sea location. If you’re unsatisfied with your existing boat or want to add upgrades, you can do so quite easily. This guide will quickly explain how you can edit your existing boat in Rust.

How to modify your boat in Rust

The first step is to build your own boat. This process is relatively easy, and you’ll need a Boat Building Station. Once you complete the process at the Helm, your boat is ready.

To edit the boat’s design, return to the Helm/Steering Wheel. Hold the Interaction button and choose Deploy and Edit. This will change your boat to the building mode, and you’re free to make modifications.

While you can modify your boat freely, there are certain restrictions (more on that later) that you’ll have to follow. Once you’re done, use the Helm to complete the process. Repeat the steps mentioned above if you want to re-edit your boat.

Best tips and tricks for editing your boat in Rust

There are different types of upgrades you can attach to your boat. The exact upgrades will largely depend on your workbench tier and the resources that you have at your disposal.

  • Adding more sails will allow your boat to move more quickly. Sails don’t consume fuel, and they can be a cost-efficient way to make your boat more mobile.
  • Adding more engines might cost you more fuel, but they can be useful when you’re in a bind. To build an engine, you’ll also require a level 2 workbench.
  • Cannons are also necessary before you reach the Deep Sea location. You’ll encounter some dangerous enemies at the different POIs, and you need to eliminate them before you can look for loot. Having a cannon on your ship will help you to clear the enemies more quickly.

Here’s the list of resources you’ll need to make a cannon.

  • Level one Workbench
  • 100 Wood
  • 200 Metal Fragments

Finally, you can also add various planks and ramps to your boat. These aren’t necessary, but they allow you to access different parts of the boat with greater ease.
