How to defeat Royal Revenant in Elden Ring

Wake up from this grafted nightmare.

Elden Ring’s enemies tend to pose a challenge even when their character models are not composed of many stitched-together corpses that make their moves much harder to predict. The Royal Revenant doesn’t merely belong in that awful enemy category — he’s the worst of the bunch.

Don’t feel bad if he’s giving you a hard time, as even some of the finest Elden Ring players in the world consider the Royal Revenant the worst challenge in the game.

Still, let’s not put our mere two arms down. It’s time to look at how you can bring this thing down. First, you’ll need to find it, which is rather easy. He haunts those ruins in Liurnia of the Lakes that you pass by on your way to Caria Manor.

As mentioned by speedrunner Distortion2, the biggest problem with the menace of Liurnia of the Lakes is its relentlessness. This is an incessant close-quarters murder machine that hits plenty, hits hard and doesn’t leave many openings for counterattacks.

Royal Revenenant’s moveset

The Royal Revenant shares many physical similarities with the Grafted Scion. That’s the very first boss we encounter in Elden Ring — the one that the game wants us to lose against, but the two are very different enemies — because the Revenant is much more aggressive.

Danger level C attacks:

Quick Slam, Rearing Slam – His least dangerous attack is one where he simply hits the ground. It’s slow and telegraphed, so easily the best opening you’ll get to put some damage into this thing.

He only has one real ranged attack, Poison Gout, with which he tries to snipe players with a beam of goo. You can also dodge this one, but you likely won’t be close enough to dish out any meaningful punishment if you’re playing a melee character.

Danger level A attacks:

Swing – The revenant can jump and lunge at you from a distance. You can dodge this move, but be aware that it features one of those Godrick The Grafted-style delayed animations that can bait players into an early dodge roll. You can also punish this one.

Danger level S attack:

Wild Swings – In his most dangerous move, the Revenant will charge at the player and unleash a long barrage of devastating attacks. Getting caught by this one will likely spell death. You can physically block it, but I’d always recommend you try to dodge it instead as even blocking won’t prevent you from getting pinned against a wall.

Other relevant ability:

Though the animation isn’t particularly fast, the Royal Revenant can make use of a special teleport to get to a strategically beneficial location. He’ll open a portal, step into it, disappear, and then slowly appear somewhere else. Players should use his away time to see where he’ll pop up next, as he’ll give you time to get at least one hit in.

As I’ve previously stated, the Royal Revenant isn’t kind to melee players, as he only features one good opening for punishment. He is, however, not that much of a problem if you have any sort of long-ranged solution at hand. Any sort of ranged magic will do wonders against him. Moreover, he’s weak to healing magic, which will both damage him and might even stand to break its stance.

I hope this guide has left our readers more confident when it comes to facing off against this boss because, at a very “interesting” point in the game, he’ll start showing up as a regular enemy. Stay brave.
