The start of the Spring Clean update in Rust brings the Water Wheel as a new deployable for players, and it’s an immensely useful item. You can use it to generate electricity and power devices that require that energy source.

Let’s find out how you can add this power source to your base and make it functional.

How to get the Water Wheel in Rust

The Water Wheel is a tier-1 item that needs to be crafted with the correct resource. You’ll first need to get its blueprint, which can be obtained from multiple sources. I received it as a random loot, and you should look into elite-grade and military crates to raise the chances in your favor.

Once you find the blueprint, you can then craft the item at a level 1 Workbench. You’ll need the following resources.

  • 500 Wood
  • 1 Sheet Metal
  • 2 Gears

How to use the Water Wheel in Rust

The first task is to place the Water Wheel at a suitable location. The item, as you might have guessed, requires a water supply to work. Hence, you have to place it in a body of water so it gets submerged. Once the Water Wheel has been placed, it will activate and generate power.

Once the power is generated, use Root Combiners to channel it into a single source. Next, you have to place a battery based on your needs. The battery must be connected to the Root Combiner to store power.

Finally, you’ll need to install Electrical Branches and Splitters to distribute the produced power. You can now add electronic devices to your base, and they will be operational (as long as you’re not going over the total capacity).
