Playing matchmaker.

Horses are some of the most reliable and best uses of transportation in Minecraft. They are also quite adorable and come in many different variants, so it is understandable some players might want a specific horse. If that is the case for you, here’s what you need to know about how to breed horses in Minecraft.

How to breed horses in Minecraft

Breeding horses in Minecraft works pretty similarly to the other animal types in the game, except with some key requirements and differences. First and foremost, you need two horses of any kind. They don’t have to have the same pattern or color, you just need two adult horses. From there, I recommend building a pin or fence around to keep the two in a contained area. This makes breeding a bit easier.

Next, you’ll need to feed them either a golden apple or a golden carrot to start breeding the horses. You aren’t necessarily guaranteed to get a foal from this every single time you use a golden apple or carrot, so be sure to have plenty on hand, along with some patience.

If done right, a baby foal will appear with its parents. The look of the horse is determined by the look of the parents so if you have a certain pattern in mind, it might take you a few tries to obtain that particular horse.

How to get golden apples and carrots

The key part about breeding horses, other than finding two horses, is the golden apples or carrots. Either one will work for this situation, but obtaining them will require some extra steps. You can find golden apples and carrots in chests and dungeons throughout the world, but this is pretty time-consuming. I find it is much better to just craft them yourself.

To do this, you need to take your apple or carrot to a crafting table. For the golden carrot, use eight gold nuggets for one carrot to turn it into a golden variant. On the other hand, you need eight golden ingots and one apple to make a golden apple. The golden apple is a bit easier to get since you don’t have an extra step in there. You just need some gold ore, turn that into ingots, and then find an apple. Fortunately, apples are pretty common in the world as drops from trees you knock down.
