How to attach a trailer to a vehicle in Project Zomboid

The more stuff you get in Project Zomboid, the better equipped you’ll be to survive the harsh zombie apocalypse. How can you move items around with ease? With a trailer, of course.

Sadly, hooking up your trailer to your vehicle isn’t easy in real life, and it can be difficult in Project Zomboid if you don’t know what you’re doing too. If you need help attaching a trailer to your car, we’re here to show you how it’s done.

How to tow a trailer in Project Zomboid

The first step is to line up your car or truck with the trailer. Make sure the back of your vehicle is lined up with the front of whatever you’d like to tow, whether that’s a trailer or another car. 

Walk to the back of your car, and when the trunk of your vehicle is highlighted green, you’re in the right spot. Press the V key, and you’ll get an option on the wheel that will let you attach the trailer to your car or truck. It will show up as a silver hook, and selecting this option will have your character attach the trailer to your car.

If you aren’t seeing the prompt, chances are your vehicle and trailer aren’t close enough to each other. Move them a bit closer, or try walking a bit closer to the trailer with your character. 

If you’re trying to tow another vehicle and aren’t getting the option to attach, it could be that the hitch is on the front of the car you’re towing instead of the back. Flip it around if you need to, and the prompt should appear.

You can now tow anything you like, from other vehicles to leather strips.

Towing trailers and vehicles in Project Zomboid

Whenever you’ve attached a trailer or another vehicle to your car or truck, you’ll use up more mileage, just like in real life. Project Zomboid strives for realism in many ways, and the heavier the attachment is, the more mileage you’ll use up.

Depending on the horsepower of your car or truck, it’s possible that you’ll struggle to tow anything of a certain weight. For example, a car will struggle to tow a large van. Again, apply the same physics from real life when deciding what to tow. 

Some traits, particularly the Sunday Driver trait, will hinder your ability to tow a trailer. You’ll be driving much slower with the trait, and you’ll likely struggle to get it from place to place, no matter the horsepower of your car. 

Once you’re finished towing, simply get out of the vehicle, head to the back where you attached it, and press V to bring up the wheel again. There will be an option to detach the trailer, and they’ll be separated again.
