How Many Pokemon Are in Scarlet & Violet?

Gotta ... Catch ... Em All??

I am hardly alone in saying this, but from the earliest story arcs of my life, I remember sitting before a TV and being entranced by the bright, colorful lights of Pokemon. In fact, it was those bright, colorful lights that nearly made it so I would be barred from participating in Ash Ketchum’s journey to become the very best, like no one ever was. I remember one signature phrase repeated like clockwork, however:

“Gotta Catch ‘Em All!”

At the time, there were only 150 — 151 if you count Mew — ‘mons in the bestiary. And, that was in, what, 1999? 2000? It’s 2023, and we’re on the ninth gen of pocket monsters, a year since the release of Scarlet and Violet. Those additions now have us asking, how many ‘mons are in the most recent flagship games?

Some might suggest that we find the total number of Pokemon — which would be over 1,000 — and that’s our answer. But, the Scarlet and Violet Pokedex notoriously doesn’t include every single one. Plus, the two DLC packs not only add brand new ‘mons to the game, but also reintroduce some old ones.

How many Pokemon are in Scarlet & Violet?

According to the in-game Pokedex, there are a total of 400 Pokemon in the Scarlet & Violet base game. However, this number doesn’t include the occasional event Pokemon only obtainable via Mystery Gift or capturing them in a Tera Raid, like Charizard, Mew, or Mewtwo.

It also doesn’t include any Pokemon that will debut or return in the new DLC. The Pokemon Company has confirmed that at least three new monsters — Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti — will debut in The Teal Mask. Also, between The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, there will be over 230 familiar monsters from the series’ illustrious past reintroduced.

The Teal Mask is set to release on September 13. It requires players already own either Pokemon Scarlet or Pokemon Violet to function.
