Windrose is now finally available, albeit as an early access title. This in-development pirate adventure title lets you sail the high seas in pursuit of golden shores, all the while putting you in situations stranger than the strangest tides you might wash up on.

And no pirate captain is complete without their crew, to whom they owe their success as much as the crew owes it to them. A co-op multiplayer game, Windrose lets you host servers temporarily or even set up dedicated ones for persistent play, though the maximum number of players on both can have a significant effect on the game.

So, here is everything you need to know about Windrose‘s max player count per server.

By default, Windrose sets a maximum lobby size of four players, which is on track with many other similar games. Parties of four will provide you with a sizeable crew and stable performance, as this appears to be the intended setting for the game, or at least the one best suited to the current state of its netcode and backend.

However, players are free to increase lobby size to up to eight players per server, meaning you can more than double the default value. Developers warn against doing so at the moment, as it can have a tremendous, detrimental effect on server performance since the game is currently not as stable when there are so many people in a single session at the same time. This is very much in the testing phase so far, so proceed with caution.

Being an Unreal Engine 5 game, mod support is going to take a bit to pick up the pace, especially considering the game’s status as an early access title, which always means frequent updates and patches that brick mods altogether. There is currently no available mod to increase maximum lobby sizes past eight players, but since Windrose is quickly growing in popularity each day as word of mouth spreads, I don’t think that’ll last too long.

Bigger lobbies and party sizes are some of the most popular mods for co-op games, and they always tend to release close to a game’s launch. With the weekend coming our way slowly but surely, I could see a mod to increase server sizes come out, though I also reckon it’ll cause quite a stir if it doesn’t come with optimizations to keep the game stable and running smoothly.

Either way, eight players is the most you can pack into a single session so far, and we’ll have to wait to see if the devs will unlock the option on their own, allowing you to test out even bigger lobbies.
